Ben at the South Fayette School District, May 2, 2007
Big Ben was the star attraction at a pep rally Wednesday morning in McDonald at the South Fayette School District.
The quarterback's visit was the result of hard work by students, who sold thousands of bottles of Big Ben's Barbeque Sauce. All of the proceeds were split between the South Fayette Athletic Club and the Ronald McDonald House.
"They did a fundraiser that is going to help their school and a great cause -- the Ronald McDonald House -- a cause I put a lot of time and effort into, so I am glad they were able to do such a great job," said Roethlisberger.
"This is so exciting," said Superintendent Dr. Linda Hippert. "We know he is a great role model for our students, and they watch him on TV."
"I think about when I was in high school," said Roethlisberger. "If someone came back to speak, what did I want to hear and not want to hear?"
Students who sold the most sauce got their pictures taken with Roethlisberger, who was sporting a South Fayette Green ball cap.
"It used to surprise me, it doesn't surprise me anymore," said Roethlisberger. "Steeler fans, like I have said numerous times, are the best."
The students raised more than $6,800, which is roughly 4,166 bottles of barbeque sauce.
