From Cassie Wellen, who attended training camp with her husband on July 31st:
Erin, I attended training camp on the 31st and thought I would share this story with fellow fans.
I am a member of the Steelers Fan Club and was on the field for the first practice wearing a Ben jersey. My husband sat behind the fencing with his Miami Redhawks jersey on and was interviewed by the Associated Press. His statements actually appeared on NFL.com.
Anyway, after practice Ben held his press conference and then went to the left side of the bleachers to sign autographs, we were on the other side of the complex. An older security guard and a younger female security guard noticed our jerseys and felt bad because he was not coming to where we were located. They took us through the crowds of people to the top of the campus to wait for Ben to get out of the cart.
Since he gave his shoes away (above) he did not come to where we were located, but the young female guard stayed with us and took us into the bookstore. She took both our jerseys and a hat into the locker room and came back out with them autographed. We watched her take them into the locker room and I saw Ben hand them back to her when the door opened.
I thought this was the best thing ever. Although we did not personally meet him, he was nice enough to sign the jerseys after he was already done for the day.
I just thought I would share this story with you and hopefully many people will realize he is making the appropriate steps to regain his fan base. I was never not a fan.
I am a disabled vet and the first time I saw Ben play I was deployed to Iraq. So that Christmas I received a "Ben" jersey for Christmas from home. This past year I wrote Ben and told him my story, and on Christmas Eve I received two of his special cards. That was the best present ever.
I just hope that one day I have the pleasure of meeting him and saying thank you for these wonderful experiences.
*Cassie, thank you so much for sharing your story!
