USA Weekend Magazine - October 19-21, 20071979 viewsBen Roethlisberger Hands It To Canines
Ben with one of his dogs, Hercules, in Switzerland last year."Growing up in Findlay, Ohio, I always had dogs around my house, and my dad instilled in me a love and respect for animals. Today, I have two wonderful dogs to come home to every day.
Last year, Flip, the lone police dog in my hometown, was shot and killed, so I bought the department a new dog and came up with a concept. Part of my Ben Roethlisberger Foundation -- which already funds a youth football program in Findlay and benefits the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh -- would provide grants to buy a service dog for police and fire departments in every city where we play a game this season and, when we play at home, somewhere in Pittsburgh.
In some cases, the city doesn't need a dog, but it needs bulletproof vests for its animals, just like a regular officer would wear. Many police department budgets don't include funding for protective K-9 vests. The police tell us what's needed.
Unfortunately, I'm not able to meet most of the dogs our grants provide, but I have played with Spike, Flip's successor. He is an amazing animal and can jump right up to the ceiling of an office building -- like 8 feet.
I was raised to appreciate my blessings and always try to help others not as fortunate as myself. Making a difference is about influencing and changing lives. We all have the power to do that. Make A Difference Day is your chance to help your fellow man -- or man's best friend."

USA Weekend - July 20092313 viewsBen and Samuel L. Jackson on the cover.
From the article/interview:
Our USA WEEKEND Magazine cover guys will be [at the 2009 ESPY Awards] : actor Samuel L. Jackson, who's hosting the show for the fourth time, and Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback for the reigning Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jackson confesses that the show strikes at a primary -- even childlike -- source of joy for him. "When I'm at the ESPYs, the little kid in me who grew up watching sports in Tennessee comes out," he says, taking a break during our cover shoot. "We actors think they're something special, and the sports stars think that the actors are something special. Behind the scenes, you'll hear the top athletes in the world tell an actor, 'I could never do what you do.'
Then you hear an actor tell an athlete the very same thing. It's weird and funny and surreal all at the same time."
Roethlisberger has gone to great lengths to attend the show in the past. He appeared as a surprise guest after suffering serious injuries in a motorcycle accident in 2006. Now, he's returning as a two-time Super Bowl winner. "Sports guys like me get excited about this because many of us are huge movie fans," he says. "When I met Sam the first time, it was great because I know I must have seen 20 of his movies." (Only 20, Ben? The man has more than 120 movie and TV credits on his "IMDb.com" profile!)
Big Ben & Jackson go one-on-one --
We caught up with Jackson and Roethlisberger as they hung out, getting their take on several areas of interest:
Jackson on whether they've golfed together: We've always wanted to. But we just never have gotten together. We did have a near-miss opportunity recently. Ben played in the U.S. Open Challenge. But I couldn't play because I had already committed to another tournament. So Ben played there with Justin Timberlake instead. That J.T. gets all the love!
Roethlisberger on whether he has ever acted: I never have -- unless you count that Disney ad I did after the Super Bowl. But that's not really acting. What Sam does is acting.
Jackson on their common job demands: Both jobs are about preparation. I read my scripts over and over, trying to understand my character. It's the same for Ben. He studies his playbook and practices until the entire complicated process becomes instinctive to him. In the end, we both go out there and perform acts that look spontaneous, as if they're happening for the first time.
*thanks Jan!

Inside of "SI - 50 Years of Faces in the Crowd", 12/15/063938 viewsBen Roethlisberger, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers
>The day Ben Roethlisberger appeared in FACES IN THE CROWD, Findlay High School athletic director Jerry Snodgrass decided to have some fun. He scanned the magazine page into his computer at school and changed key words to make the item read as if it were celebrating the star quarterback's achievements in dodgeball. When Roethlisberger read it, Snodgrass recalls, he laughed so hard "he just literally rolled on the floor."
The joke page was fun, but Roethlisberger remembers the real one as a benchmark in his young career. "It was my first time ever in a magazine, one I subscribed to since I was real little," he says. "So to be in there was just awesome." After four years at Miami (Ohio), Roethlisberger was taken in the first round by the Steelers, and became the starter the second game of the season and went 14-1, becoming the Rookie of the Year. In his second year, he led the Steelers to victory in Super Bowl XL.
