"They've won championships, Oscars, and Grammys. They've fought in Super Bowls, boardrooms, and even in the military. They' ve worked hard, completed the toughest jobs, performed the impossible. For MF's salute to the fittest men of the year, we've selected guys who, when facing a wall that separates them from their dreams, haven't just climbed over the obstacle, they've crashed through it." "Driving Home" by Jerome Bettis2938 viewsBettis on Ben Roethlishberger, P. 3
"When Ben got here, I took on the role of big brother. Warren Moon told him to look me up when he got in town, that I would help him out and guide him. When he got here, he asked me to come by and talk to him, so I did. We talked, and I gave him an understanding of what to expect as a first-rounder. I told him I was a former first-round pick, even though it was quite a few years ago, and I understood the expectations and everything that was being asked of him, things to be careful of as a young guy. The relationship developed from the standpoint of my being a big brother, telling him what to do, what not to do, to speak only when spoken to as a rookie, those kind of things. He is definitely the little brother. He is always after me trying to get the upper hand and get back at me. I am always getting on him, so whenever he has the opportunity to get on me, he does that." ESPN - The Magazine: December 1, 2008 Issue2437 viewsESPN - The Magazine introduced a series of stories entitled "Living Scared" about the fine line today's athletes walk with their fans, as well as the threats they recieve from others. Ben, the Jaguars Fred Taylor, the Redskins Clinton Portis, and the Titans Kevin Mawae are just a few of the players interviewed.
From the Article:
Ben Roethlisberger's public persona isn't limited to game days. The Steelers QB is a pitchman for Nike and a local car dealership—and his image adorns the bottle of his custom barbecue sauce. Which leaves Big Ben conflicted. Does his high profile give fans an invitation into his life? And if there's a line that shouldn't be crossed, where is it? With no easy answers, Roethlisberger, 26, is one of a growing number of players who uses bodyguards when going out. He says that, much like in a collapsing pocket, you sometimes can't tell what's coming until it's too late.
